D’Aquisto New Yorker DQ-NYE Archtop Hollow Body (Japan, 1997)

This is an excellent condition D’Aquisto DQ-NYE New Yorker jazz guitar, made by the Terada factory of Japan in 1997. It is a licensed, faithful and fantastic sounding interpretation of James L. D’Aquisto’s top-of-the line New Yorker Special from the 70’s – the time period during which he established his great originality and innovative designs.

The distinctive headstock inlay of this New Yorker is true to the original, and features the pediment and the pineapple at the center top of the black Ebony overlay headstock, with the “D’Aquisto” inlaid pearl logo below with a scroll engraved with the words “New Yorker.” On the back of the headstock are the two signature isosceles triangles.

The guitar features a solid Sitka Spruce top with a pressed arch, as well as a laminated, flamed Maple back, sides and neck. The back of the neck is fortified with another variety of Maple chosen for structural support. The guitar does have a couple of tiny flaws in the finish that are barely noticeable. One on the  lower left bout and one on the lower right. See the pictures with the white arrows. In regular light they can barely be seen.

The DQ-NYE is fitted with a floating gold-plated humbucking pickup with 6 exposed magnets – inspired no doubt by the Gibson Johnny Smith pickup. This 17” wide guitar (with a scale length of 25.5”) is presently set-up with flatwound strings.

The triple bound ebony fingerboard is 1 11/16th” at the nut and is inlaid on 7 frets with split block mother of pearl inlays (alternating two pieces with three pieces). The hinged Ebony tailpiece, like the Ebony bridge, is massive and passive, providing the density and solidity that allows the guitar’s tone to be full and unconstrained.  Twin gold-plated strap buttons are provided on the upper bass side and center bottom side, and the tuners are gold-plated Schallers with stairstep metal buttons.

Today, a D’Aquisto New Yorker Special from the 70’s and early 80s commonly sells for $45,000 and up. The sound and playability of this beautiful Aria New Yorker will easily get you into the ballpark of the original at a tiny fraction of the cost. This is yet another example of one of my excellent, high-value guitars.
